I make my own candy bars and I am looking into opening a candystore somewhere in the States. I don't really care where it is, as long as it gets me customers.
Where in the country would you think a candy store would do best? I am thinking states like Ohio, Kentucky, Texas etc. which have a lot of obesity and not so much care about health. What do you think? Or will it be better with northern states like Pennsylvania or New York which have a bit more depressing weather?
If it's "artisan" candy or chocolates, I'd look for a big city with a large population of high-earning hipsters. Start off selling chocolates at farmers markets, become a phenomenon, open a pop-up store somewhere, and eventually your own permanent store.
The urban yuppie hipster has a short attention span. You can never stop inventing new flavors and combinations of ingredients. It'll be hard work, but if you do it right, the payoff could be huge. Mast Brothers Chocolates in Brooklyn sells bars for $10-12 each! And people can't get enough!
Exactly. I would look to destination towns where people go to shop/relax. Some examples:
Galena, IL
Saugatuck, MI
Traverse City, MI
Blowing Rock, NC
Savannah, GA
Charleston, SC
Gatlinburg, TN

Or might not, one needs to investigate. Besides that we don't even know what kind of candy shop the OP is planning to open. The point is destination towns are desirable due to the fact you have a concentrated number of money-laden shoppers walking around looking to spend.
Think of the best tourist attraction area that you might like. Places like National Parks and historical areas where people from all over come to visit. That’s where you’ll find your customers. The best part of it is if they don’t like your candy, you don’t have to worry because they’ve already left town.
Years ago while visiting the boardwalk area along the Jersey coast I found the best place that made salt water taffy. It was so good I’d write to them and ordered more to be sent out of state to my home. These days it’s easy to ship things and you’ll have a larger customer base with busy tourist locations.
