If you can combine favorable qualities of various American cities/ regions to make an "ideal" place of residence, what/ where will you extract from?
My "ideal" existence will be in a city/ region that has:
- the Falls/ Winters of Southern California
- the summers of Seattle
- with the beaches of Fort Lauderdale without the attitude of (many/ transplanted?) Floridians
- the recreation options of Colorado & the Pacific NW
- the food of the U.S. South & the shopping malls of Dallas
- efficiency of North Easterners (in terms of things getting done quickly but thoroughly)
- but whose citizens have Texan/ Southern-style charisma & gregariousness
- and politeness & peacefulness of Midwesterners/ Oregonians
- education level of Minnesota with Washington, DC-level wages with Oklahoma cost of living of everyday goods & living expenses & Mountain state safety
- vibrant downtown of San Fran, Chicago & NYC & cultural sensibility of Boston with the down-to-earthness of Atlanta (compared to other big cities)
- suburbs/ suburban spaciousness like those of North Fulton County, Atlanta (like Alpharetta/ Roswell, GA)
- and will not at all resemble Detroit/ Buffalo/ Tampa & other terrible spots I've visited before...
The perfect US city:
1. should have a decent public school system without fear of attack if a student attends it
2. should have a great mass-transit system and not be dependent on the automobile
3. should build in rather than encourage sprawl and heavily tax construction in areas that are rural
4. should be as integrated as possible
5. should have adequate drug and alcohol treatment that is mandatory over prison sentences
6. should legalize marijuana but create life-sentences for the selling of dangerous addictive drugs
7. should have laws and severe punishment if caught with a guy (anyone convicted of a crime)
8. should have trees planted wherever possible
9. should have active neighborhood associations that report directly to the government that runs the city
the perfect US city would not have suburbs! what do you think makes most of our cities not so vibrant? look pre 1950s photos of cities compared to the life they have today!
And the perfect city would have many skyscrapers with at least 10 over 300 meters, at least 1 over 900 meters
Well, Scranton meets all of those requirements except for the sports one.
