Was just in Atlanta for 2nd time and almost mugged
Even before, I've always felt more on guard in Houston, Atlanta and New Orleans than I do in Chicago or Minneapolis (granted I've never been to Cleveland or St. Louis or Detroit).
Anyone else a little of those Southern cities with hardly anybody walking around and deserted semi-rural feeling even in the main parts of town?
I don't think I've ever felt unsafe in Atlanta except for when I drove through Bankhead. But even then I just stayed in the car and didn't stop for anything.
Southern cities are deserted especially at night- even in the main districts of town- also the sparse layout of things at night setting give off a slightly eerie feeling.
In Chicago, NYC, SF- denser and you see people of all walks of life out and about- night and day. So the sense of safety in numbers.
There is a false sense of security feeling "safe" when others are around so I'm not so sure that's a reason to deem Northern cities safer. Whatever works for you I guess....
I definitely felt safer in the Midwest than most of the South, with the primary difference that small towns in the Midwest feel notably safer than small towns in the South.

Well the question asked was "Do you feel safer...?" so whichever ones actually are safer is a different question.
