Which US cities would you say are more often called by another name than their given name?
I'm not taking about just nicknames or shortened forms; i'm taking about when one name that is not the given name is used more than the given one. Not just in the city itself, but what people across the nation would refer to them as.
It's easier to explain by elimination: Chicago is called Chicago far more than it would be called Chi or Chitown. Neither SF, San Fran, or the hated "Frisco" is used more than San Francisco. You're likely to hear New Orleans more than NOLA or Nawlins. I think the term "AC" for Atlantic City is mainly used on the northeast corridor.
but there are some that I think you hear another name more often than the real one, not just at home, but across the nation. My list would include:
New York for New York City
Philly for Philadelphia
DC for Washington
St. Pete for St. Petersburg
Salt Lake for Salt Lake City
Vegas for Las Vegas
West Palm for West Palm Beach
here's the ones I might fudge on; it could go either way:
Indy for Indianapolis
KC for Kansas City
Cincy for Cincinnati
Well, that's how I see it, just my opinion. what's yours?
People in North Carolina often talk about Winston, instead of using the full name Winston-Salem
