Agree with LA and Tampa, but do people in Atlanta really say "ATL" more than "Atlanta"?
Maybe it's just me, but Atlanta seems so much easier to say and they're both the same amount of syllables anyway.

Does dropping the "city" really translate to a nick name

like New York or Salt Lake?

Actually Tampa is the city. "Tampa Bay" is the general area, which is generally considered to include St. Petersburg, BRandon, Oldsmar, Safety Harbor, etc. etc., all of which are separate cities.

would say on the whole

LA
DC
Philly

are most commonly used but you really could say all are more shortened forms of the name as opposed to a true nick name

All are also very long - like is Minny a nick name for Minneapolis (another long one)

A true nick name would be something like Queen City
