Houston has the best freeway lighting in the country IMO. i have driven in many cities in the U.S. and Cailfornia is worst at freeway lighting i think it's due to lack of State funding. Dallas is not as nearly as good as Houston because most of her lights are normal standard 1980s looking lights where Houston has lots of High Mast Lighting.

Yes all of the interstates and highways in Florida are generally well lit except for the Florida Turnpike which is pitch dark at night until you get near a rest stop station.

In Louisiana there generally are lights on Interstates and other freeways in the metro areas. I-12 and I-10 are totally lit within East Baton Rouge Parish, though some suburban stretches in Livingston and Ascension aren't totally lit the entire way though they still are lit around the exits like Walker and Gonzales.

Maryland has sporadic lighting. Mostly just interchanges.

Massachusetts has very very little lighting even in urban areas. And maybe only half of highways have light reflectors...

Can I ask WHY??

Interstates are CLOSED to people walking, bicycles, and all other traffic except CARS and TRUCKS with headlights.

So why do you need street lights on an Interstate Highway in urban areas??

Streetlights cause glare and scattered light making it MUCH MORE DIFFICULT to see at night.

For safety reasons.....turn off the street lights on the Interstate's or put the streetlights in and have people drive with their car lights OFF.

I suspect it is cheaper and safer to turn off the street lights.

Have you ever had a problem driving on rural roads at night that have NO STREETLIGHTS??

Years ago, I looked at a satellite image of the Key West Highway in Florida...and wondered why the state of Florida was wasting ALL THOSE TAXPAYERS dollars to put streetlights on the highway!!!

When I showed up I noticed there were NO STREETLIGHTS, just the lights from the car traffic that could be seen from space!!

It is a pretty safe highway.

Highway lighting isn't so bad when the lights face the pavement. But most of the lights here (St. Louis) are the old reddish round style lights. In many cases, they are so far from the road that they are pointed diagonally. They spread light everywhere and sometimes cause glare. Luckily, these older lights are slowly being replaced with less-invasive LEDs.

High mast doesn’t mean newer. A majority of the rebuilt freeways in DFW opt for the smaller lights. I assume it reduces light pollution to neighborhoods that back up to the freeways.

In NC, most all urban and suburban areas have lit interstates.

In Kentucky and Tennessee usually larger towns and major exits have lights while smaller exits and rural streches do not.

Here are some good examples of TN's setup using the same interstate.

^^ Smaller town no real lights ^^

https://www.google.com/maps/@36.5958...7i16384!8i8192

^^ Larger town/major intersection it has some lights mostly on the ramp.

^^ Heading into Nashville ^^

^^ Downtown Nashville^^

I would say overall Tennessee probably isn't as light heavy as other states. To be honest the street lights are nice to have ,but I don't think there is a need to go overboard on them.
