Here is an article from Walk Score that discusses which cities are or aren't in a food desert: Do You Live in a Food Desert? — Walk Score Blog

First of all, it only lists 10 total cities, no? You're supposed to contact them for more?

I do not live in a "food desert." There are tons of options all around me. However, the Milwaukee inner city is a far cry from where I live. This is interesting info I guess, though definitely flawed, but in large cities it's way more about neighborhoods than overall scores.

Hey, my city made the top 5!

I actually live quite close to a supermarket. A chain called 'Smith's". The one I live right by is popularly called "Ghetto Smith's". But at least it is a supermarket. Just the crappiest one in town. Last year it went two weeks without tomatoes. Plenty of overripe, blackfleshed avocados and wilted spinach, though!

I have a car and I have driven to everyone one of those cities and had a meal there. No such thing as a food desert.

For those missing the point...the list is compiled by the website Walkscore and the criteria is for how many grocery stores are within a FIVE MINUTE WALK of where you live. Of course in any city someone can waddle into their car and drive to a grocery store.

Just personally, I wouldn't want to live a five-minute walk from a grocery store. I'd rather live a bit further away, and have some peace and quiet (and less traffic) around my home.

I live 7/10 of a mile from the local Kroger superstore and I still drive to buy groceries.

Kind of a silly list. Unless you live in a super-high density area, having full service grocery stores that close to each other isn't happening. It's not like people in Carmel, IN are starving.

I have a full service convenience store, a Subway, a pizza place, 3 or 4 bars that serve food, and a little corner grocery all within a 4-5 block walk, but I probably would be shown as being in a "food desert".

Technically, I do, but that's because I live in the country. It's a good 7-10 miles to the nearest grocery store and gas station.
