Thank you to everyone who has replied so far, the information you've all been giving is very helpful. We are going up to Syracuse for a visit this weekend, and will do some scouting around there. Do any of you have any comparative info on Vermont, or do you think it is just too expensive there? My husband has been working in manufacturing, but has been trying to break into the IT field for some years now, and is entry level networking. So manufacturing or IT networking. If there is a university nearby, that's a plus, I may at some point go back to graduate school and my husband would like to get a bachelor's degree, since it seems that most places need that now. There do seem to be schools just about everywhere, so that shouldn't be a problem.
ckh - the Lowville area looks really beautiful and especially nice because of being so close to the Adirondacks.

Given this post, there is a SUNY IT campus in Marcy just outside of Utica. SUNYIT Homepage So, places like Boonville, Clinton and Sherrill may be worth some consideration. Clinton has a New England feel/look as well. There is suppose to be some Nanotech jobs coming to a site near the campus too. There are other options in CNY as well.
