Rachel? Because of the Area 51 connection? Lol, a friend and I actually stopped in Rachel years back and ate at the Lil A'le'Inn. Not much else to see there though. A few double wides and that's about it. At least that's how it was 10 years ago. It was a "cool" experience though, in a creepy sort of way. Would have been cooler if I had seen a UFO (other than the fake one they have).
The remote desert towns in Nevada are very creepy, but Nevada is, hands down, the most eerily beautiful state in the entire country due to its sheer ruggedness and remoteness.
Borrego Springs, CA, right in the middle of the beautiful Anza-Borrego desert...best desert-type hiking, camping, offroading ever! And the best grapefruits I ever tasted. When the grapefruit trees are in bloom, the whole little town smells amazing.
Speaking of Palm Springs, do the people there consider it the Yakima of California?
I can only speak for the ones that I have been to, which all lie in either Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon. I love the Tri-Cities and Wenatchee. Pendleton didn't seem like a bad little town when I was there, either. Chelan though probably takes the cake. Not sure that it is technically desert, but it is close enough if not. Right on the south end of Lake Chelan, with gorgeous surroundings and a beautiful little town in and of itself. Love it there! (Just looked up its climate. At between 11 to 12 inches of rain per year on average, Chelan just escapes being a desert. Darn. So then it is a pretty darn cool steppe town Also just looked up Pendleton, which would also be steppe. Tri-Cities and Wenatchee however DO receive less than 10 inches per year on average).
