When I say urban, I'm talking about both high density, and walkable fairly narrow roads in the downtown with plenty of businesses. And when I say small city/town, I'm thinking about urban areas or perhaps metros of less than 100,000.

I'm sure this must've come up at some point, but I searched it and found nothing.

I guess Ithaca NY comes close, but the metro is a little bit over 100,000.

Asheville NC

I can't think of another city under 100K (population 83K) that has the skyline and urban density of Asheville.

I was rather hoping, and looking for places which were the centre of a much smaller area, rather than being a small part of the largest UA in the country, but anyhow, I had no idea these places had small but decent downtowns.

All other suggestions so far as exactly what I was looking for. These are all places I'd hoped I'd get suggested.

There have been threads about this on here before, but the density with which a good number of the PA Coal Region towns were built never fails to amaze me. Urban in terms of built structure, if not in terms of culture and current vibrancy.

The same can be said with many WV towns. Not a lot of people, but incredible amount of density. I'm from a town which now only has 1,200. But at its prime it had 2 movie theaters and a taxi service in town. I can think of a town in Southern WV (Welch) which has less than 2,500, but has multiple 8-10 story buildings.
