I can see similarities between the Triangle and Triad, Durham and Winston-Salem are similar. What would you guys say about similarities with the Atlanta metro? Or possibly, similarities between Raleigh and Columbia, SC?

I don't see a whole lot of similarities between the Triangle and Atlanta outside of some areas like Decatur, Druid Hills and Roswell. I would liken Columbia more toward Durham than I would Raleigh.

Similarities between the Triangle and metro Atlanta would be state government in Raleigh, a more historic/industrial core in Durham, Black history in Durham (Parrish Street was similar to Sweet Auburn), the universities (top notch research universities and a collection of HBCUs), gay friendliness, etc. Raleigh and Columbia share a few similarities also, being planned fall line capital cities, their main streets having terminating vistas at the state capitol, the university presence, lively warehouse districts, etc.

It's interesting to compare the Triangle to other metros. The Triad is similar, but it also holds a slightly different vibe IMO. It's more southern, but not in a Deep South way, more so in a NC way. It's not as polished or transplant saturated. Along with the Triad, I'd say Richmond is quite similar but I know others will disagree. People always compare the Triangle to NOVA, and a few spot similarities with Atlanta but I'd say Charlotte is more similar to Atlanta.
