I always say, "Just outside Tyler, Texas," unless I am talking to someone from the immediate area - then I tell them the little bedroom community just outside the loop.

When talking to people outside the area, I say I live in Austin since no one would know where Pflugerville is.

When talking to locals or someone who I know is familiar with the area, I say I live in Pflugerville.

Depending on my mood at the time, I'll either say DC or Virginia. Either one is accurate because I was raised in VA in the SE part of the state and I live less than 10 minutes from the DC line.

Saying Arlington, VA works too because of the Pentagon puts it on the map.

If I'm in another part of the state, I say "Metro Detroit" or "Detroit".

In the Metro area, I'll say Rochester Hills.
