Ironically enough, I took a class there last summer at GCRL. I really loved Ocean Springs and the research center but not the beaches so much. Dirty gulf/estuary water and Biloxi was kind of dirty feeling as well :/ the islands are very nice though you're correct.

If you can afford it, Hawaii or South Florida. Southern California is nice as well, but it sounds like you want somewhere with warmer weather and water.
