Which metros of populations less than 1 million have the largest downtowns? That could be largest in terms of size, or also in terms of population that lives in the downtown...both are interesting to me. If there is a metro just over a million feel free to include that too!

Just guessing, but perhaps Omaha, Tucson, Albuquerque and Honolulu may be good fits for what you are looking for.

Honolulu is got to be up there---though I guess it depends what you consider downtown--it's fairly urban from Chinatown to Waikiki with fairly continuous buildup from downtown on. A lot of highrise apartments and condos in the city as well.

Long Beach (California) has a decent downtown...smaller than Honolulu though.

Tucson would have over 1 million people next year, if they don't have it already, and Honolulu is very close as well.

Count Albuquerque out, downtown is pretty weak. Tucson's downtown is developing nicely and it now has a modern street car connection. Omaha's downtown has some charm to it around the Old Market and it has a nice waterfront park on the river. Honolulu's downtown area is mostly government and a financial district, but Chinatown and Waikiki are nearby. Honolulu would probably pack the biggest punch in terms of urban amenities and density for a metro under a million.

Tulsa has improved their downtown over the past few years. I like the Art Deco skyscrapers and churches. We have a huge park that will be completed just outside of it in 2020. Town will likely be just over a million at the next census.
