If I travel to Minnesota most of the people are 5th generation Americans who come from a German or Scandinavian background. Through the generations their parents and grandparents encouraged a set of behaviors common from the old country. This has had an impact on the general culture of the State for generations. If I go to Boston there are many people who trace their background to Ireland. In Long Island many of the people are from Italy. The result is a completely different social culture in each city. I know there are exceptions but history and a majority have a big effect.
How does the ethnic breakdown of your community affect its social culture?
I would say it affects mentality and general atmosphere. Possibly even politics in the case of Minnesota. Read up on "Seattle freeze" and "Minnesota nice", as someone who know Scandinavia well I'm not at all surprised where that comes from. I believe most people of German and Irish descent live in St. Paul. The Germans are mostly Catholic from what I have understood. North German protestants are more similar to Scandinavians. Generally speaking Scandinavians are more subdued and not as direct as Germans can be to strangers. I would compare the polite but not necessarily friendly Scandinavians (although there are regional differences of course) to the English.
