I'm from Central Europe and haven't done a lot of travelling in the US yet, except on Google Street View. It always appears to me that US cities don't really have residential neighborhoods with mid-rise tenement buildings (~5-6 floors) the same way European cities have (think of neighborhoods like Kreuzberg in Berlin) - with the notable exception of NYC, which has boroughs like Brooklyn and Manhattan. Usually, there seems to be a downtown with lots of skyscrapers and commercial buildings and outside of that, single-family homes begin (sometimes row houses like in Philadelphia or Boston).
My question is this: Can you think of any US or Canadian neighborhoods outside of NYC where the majority of buildings are mid-rise apartment blocks (preferably, but not necessarily pre-WWII) that create this typical urban fabric associated with European cities?
Cincinnati’s Over the Rhine Neighbourhood. One of America’s largest intact historic urban neighborhoods.settles by Germans and at one point had over 40,000 people in 0.498 sq. Miles.
Washington DC's Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, Cleveland Park and Connecticut Heights among others were developed around a time where that type of building was a norm I believe.
I'll add Milwaukee's Third Ward. Not only a great place to live...on Lake Michigan, next to downtown, and on the river, as well. The Third Ward also has a Restoration Hardware, Anthropologie, West Elm, Milwaukee Public Market...lots of great restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Can't go wrong.
There is lots of this type of construction throughout the city
OP asked about mid rises, though. 3 stories is low rise.
