Is the Boston Metropolitan region the best place to live, work, and play in the U.S.? (living in, cost of)

I answered very simply because you yourself gave no real reason as to why it is the best. I have never honeslty been to Boston, but I am the kind of person that needs to be near mountains, lakes, etc, and I'm not really a fan of living in big cities. I would however love to go to Boston some day and get me some real chowder.

I never said its the best, I simply asked a question.
it's one of the nicest areas of the country but in my opinion it's not the best place to live. I like Boston to visit but I prefer places such as Seattle, San Fran Bay Area or even Chicago to live in. For one thing, it's quite expensive to live in Boston. Plus the weather is harsh often. and it does have a slightly snobby, elitist vibe to it that not everyone likes. But it's definitely quite a place to play in, for sure. I wouldn't say it's the most balanced city.
I think this topic is a little silly, but I'll answer anyway.
I love Boston in a way I can't really imagine loving any other place, but it's got some serious drawbacks. The T doesn't run all night, and despite having early last call it doesn't even run until bars close. The cost of living is prohibitively high. Some people have issues with the weather, but personally I've never lived anywhere that has milder weather so I can't complain about that. So best place? Probably not, but it's still wonderful.
I've spent a good amount of time in the Boston area lately, and I have to say it's generally a very nice, established area. Your quintessential Northeastern city/suburb dichotomy with a defined old, urban core with quaint and cozy towns integrated nicely with top-rate public transportation. That said, the winters can get particularly harsh in New England, not to mention it's one of the most expensive places to live in the US. So yeah, I'd rate it as one of the top 5 metros areas, but whether any place is THE BEST place to live in the whole country will always be up for debate. Thankfully, we all have our own tastes.
