A nightlife not dominated by clubs (e.g. Miami Beach, Vegas, etc.). A nightlife where the majority hang out in bars
That's most major cities outside of Miami, Las Vegas and LA. The best in my opinion are cities with blue collar origins with lots of varying types of neighborhood bars like Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Seattle and even parts of NYC such as Brooklyn.
Milwaukee, for sure. They're called "Taverns" there. A Wisconsin tavern that has a grill is often a very good and affordable place to eat. But in recent years, even those have become trendy enough to be called night-clubs.
An exception might be most college towns (at least ones home to a major university). Clubs are a major part of the bar scene there, but then again most college towns aren't major cities so what else is there for college kids to do when it's not spring break? (and don't say 'study')
Portland. The whole city is just one brewpub after another. That's why its nickname is Beer Nirvana.
