Most that live outside Chicago would probably say the Sears Tower. To me, I think its a tie between the old water tower, the Sears Tower, the John Hancock, the Chicago Board of Trade building and Wrigley Field.
Phoenix/Tempe/Mesa/Scottsdale.......ummmm......well..........I'm going to have to go with the family pool on this one. You may not think of Phoenix when you see someone with a pool in Cleveland, but my goodness they are abundant out here!!!!

to me, even before I lived here, when I would think of Chicago, i'd think of the Sears Tower and the Hancock building because they both kind of anchor the skyline.
New Orleans: The Superdome or St. Louis Cathedral
Philadelphia: Independence Hall
Las Vegas: Stratosphere Tower and/or the strip in general
Los Angeles: Hollywood sign or the Chinese Theatre
Nashville: The Batman building (bellsouth tower) or the Ryman Auditorium
I think FutureCop is right The Statue of Liberty was never a 'symbol' of NY, it's just that some people associate it! NY used to think this also. NY used to have a red on white license plate and between the letters and numbers, right there in the middle, was a little red statue. That had to be removed. Aside from the Hollywood sign for L. A., there is also the City Hall, which is the most recognizable in the world, the Theme building at L A X, which literally says 'airport', and of course, the cloverleaf.
