Let's say you had a budget of 350k and were looking to buy a 100-150 year old Vic (or Queen Anne, Italianate, Four Square etc) in a well-knit neighborhood of a mid-sized city within an hour of one of our fine coasts. Decent schools are important as is low-crime, a warmish climate and educated neighbors.

Where would you start looking? What cities and what neighborhoods?

There's quite a few in Humboldt County, CA which is on the coast. Can't comment on other factors. Ferndale is especially pristine, however.

Brunswick, GA's South End. Beautiful Victorian neighborhood, remarkably inexpensive housing stock. 350K would go far there.

I think your best bet is to look somewhere in the Philadelphia area. There's plenty of historic homes in the "suburban" boroughs surrounding the city at that price range, although perhaps not the top suburbs. Particularly if you're willing to consider living in a larger rowhouse or duplex (semi-attached). Somewhere like Phoenixville, Royersford, or West Chester could work.

Cape May was the first city that came to mind when I thought coastal and Victorian but it's missing some other qualifiers on your list.

Other towns in the Philly area closer to the city could work too as noted above. And in the city itself-Mount Airy, Roxborough, East Falls and parts of West Philly have what you are looking for. Chestnut Hill and other areas are probably too pricey.

The historic district and surrounding neighborhoods of Georgetown, SC have Victorians in that price range, although I'm not too sure how the schools stack up.

Eureka was definitely the first place I thought of but I doubt it's cheap there...

Good thought but there's pretty much nothing for 350K or under.

I would recommend small towns on the eastern shore of Virginia such as Onancock or Chincoteague as well as the south end of Maryland's eastern shore in places like Princess Anne or Crisfield. All have a good deal of housing stock under 350K in varying styles ranging from Victorians to Queen Anne and Italianate along with American Four Squares or Center Hall Colonials.
