There's a bunch of family drama going on in my life right now that I can't do anything about and don't want anything to do with, and I'm tired of being stuck in the middle of it in the role of a kid.

I've got a 10-month volunteer assignment lined up for me as late as mid-february, but in case I can't wait it out that long or the assignment falls through, I'm coming up with a backup plan to go to trade school or move out, preferably to Iowa where the assignment is. I have considered the military, but I am not yet in proper shape for it.

As this would be my first time truly moving out on my own, what should I do and expect? Where should I go?

Some place warm in the winter where you don't worry much about cost of weather,
Some place with a growing job market
Some place the skews toward your age group.
Some place not too expensive.

Tulsa, big Arizona cities, Florida (except Miami which has become expensive again) Texas, and North Carolina.

If you go to a hot city, be prepared to deal with it sans air conditioning.

So. I need to either consider Tulsa, or find a city with reliable-enough public transporation in Texas or Arizona. I would consider New York City, but I hear that it's impossible to get a job there unless you have connections. That, and it's expensive. Would St. Louis be a good option?

I've found places on airbnb for between $480 and $520 per month in cities like Fort Worth, Tulsa, Indianapolis, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Salt Lake City, Columbus, and Abilene TX. Good luck.

Don't move anywhere without a job. That $700 will evaporate in about 10 minutes.

This is a terrible time of year to chose to be homeless.

Terrible idea. Florida has a primarily low wage workforce and cities like Orlando and Tampa besides places like Miami/Ft Lauderdale offer disproportionately expensive rental housing versus typical salaries. Orlando for example has an average rental cost of around $900 for a one bedroom apartment and a median salary of 25K a year.

I agree. Cities like Indianapolis, Omaha, Little Rock, Louisville or Oklahoma City offer affordable housing and low unemployment.
