Hello there,

Is full-time international student not eligible to get a social security number?
IS an employment offer letter needed to apply for it?

Thank you

. However, there are 2 types of social security cards that are issued to foreigners without work authorization, as well as foreign students and individuals on temporary visas. These Social Security Cards contain one of the following restrictions printed on them.
# VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION
# NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT

Do you mean that I could apply those social security cards without employment offer? what type of SSN is that?
If I had those cards, would I not be eligible to work on campus?

When I was going to college at Michigan State, they had an office where I could get a new social security card. Maybe you can check with the offices at the college you attend to see if they have services for you to get a SS card.

I did, but the international student office ask me to find a job first and bring an employment offer letter so that they can proceed to get SSN.

A friend of mine got SSN with the help of the director from the ISO and the director said that full-time international students are eligible to apply for the SSN regardless of job offer.
His SSN is stated that "# VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION", not sure what it means.

Why SSN policy vary from school to school? Does it depend on the Social security office?
