Just read your history books ( I, too, need to read up on some stuff) and you'll know what I'm talking about.
There are racists people up north and down south. It's a different type of vibe, but racism exist regardless.
Why people like to jump on the south being more racist than other states, puzzles me. I will admit that the Jena 6 thing is an ol' backwards, back in the 1930's type riot, but let's face it: THE SOUTH WAS THE REGION WHO HAD SLAVERY. If anybody in here believes in the spiritual realm, you'll know that spirits like racisms, don't just go away overnight. Although, blacks are free in the southern states, we are still oppressed in the mind, because of the overall atmosphere and the things we suffered in the past. It will always be "Jena 6's" in the south.
Then you go to the northern states, and everything is fine. You have to be very observant in the North. Jena 6 won't happen in Washington D.C because of the history of that place. But it's some intense segregation going on.
The history of a place really matters, but that doesn't mean racism doesn't exists everywhere in America.
And America can be incredibly accepting too. We beat ourselves over the head too much.
As far as the North being segragated. A lot of it has to do with cost of living and a lot of it has to do with people of the same race wanting to live together-there's nothing inherently wrong with that.
It doesn't matter what color the skin is, what religion, what sexual orientation and so on....there will always be people who will point the finger at someone else. One thing I have learned is that racists exist in all races. Not to sound cheesy but I really just wish everyone would get along. I have friends of different races and I wouldn't change it for the world. It doesn't matter what the issue is, there is ALWAYS someone vocal on the other side. We love our first amendment in this country and unfortunately it does (to some degree) give people the right to say what they want even if it is not morally right or offends someone else or even if it is hateful.

The title of this thread is "Just Face It: All of America can be racists! Reply to Thread".
My response... duh.
I mean, this is the most diverse country in the world... and with that, it's also the most racist country in the world. And deep down inside, I believe that everyone is a little racist. It's just some people who are really hardcore in their beliefs that they express them out loud for everyone else to see and hear. That's just life. When you live in this country, you will have, let's say, too much pride for your own race sometimes. That's just human nature. The only thing you can do is just except other people for who they are on the inside and don't focus on the outside. Some people have it the other way around. Don't be like them.

As an admiring tourist (and American studies major) I have to agree. Racism is rampant in the so-called developed world, and instead of being apologists, I think Americans need to bring forward the people who fight it on a daily basis - let the world know that the U.S *is* on the whole, an open minded, progressive place. You've come a long way, there's further to go, but dont beat yourselves up, it achieves nothing. (and you really don't need to do it).
How many years do you think it'll be before Australia or England even consider a non-caucasian prime minister? Crocodile Dundee will utter a coherent sentence before that happens!
Best thing is to be positive, and set a good example where you can...IMHO.
Yes, America is racists with some parts of the country worse then others, but racism is throughout the world (not saying that it makes it right). Look at Asia; the Chinese, Japanese, former Soviet Bloc countries, Germany (present day, not under Hitler) or Poland. Ask anyone in London or Ireland what they feel about the amounts of immigrants moving in and you'll see that there are some hard-core racists attitudes out there that make America seem pale (no pun) in comparison.
Excuse me. Please name a country that doesn't have some major ethnic divides in its past history, please. And name one of them that has managed to resolve it successfully.
Oh god, please don't make me sing that Avenue Q song...
