The population is concentrated in SE Michigan, closer to Ohio and demographically it's closer to Ohio as well. On the other hand in terms of geography (i.e. northern half of Michigan is very different from anything in Ohio) and politics (more Democratic in presidential elections) it's more like Wisconsin.

Overall, is Michigan more similar to Ohio or Wisconsin?

I'd say that the Upper Peninsula portion is similar to WI and I think sharing a land mass may have something to do with that.

I think the southern, more highly populated portion of the state is more like northern OH. SW Michigan does have a Chicagoland/northern IN influence and other portions if Western MI has a Dutch Reformed influence.

The UP might similar to some northern areas of WI, but it's certainly not like the majority of the state.

Geographically speaking the LP is also quite similar in character to Wisconsin.

Michigan is on Eastern Standard Time, like Ohio is. Wisconsin by contrast is solidly on Central Standard Time. Michiganders don't think of themselves as "Midwesterners."

Tis also news to this Michigander. Being isolated in what is for all intents and purposes a geographical cul de sac, the culture of Michiganders tends to be more nuanced in comparison to other Midwestern states. None of us are confused about that however.

I think Michiganders during most of the 20th Century thought of themselves as part of the industrial manufacturing northEAST, not as part of the prairie farming clans of the midwest. At least all my family members who worked in the auto industry did, and those who still live there do. Now that that industry has in large part collapsed, I think there's a bit of an identity crisis there. I have never heard anyone refer to themselves as a "north midwesterner."
