Its housing prices are out of reach for most people in most industries. It must be pure hell trying to attract and keep a staff even into the low six figures.
Even on the tech side, the SF area does pretty well with the young six-figure earners, but even those jobs often need to dual-locate elsewhere to collectively scale up an organization. Nobody employs 50,000 in the SF area.
When the headquarters decision prioritizes attracting mid/late-career people or people earning less than $150,000, it's easy to see why they'd leave entirely.

^ This. If the typical home costs $1,000,000 in much of the Bay Area, then how is someone even earning $100,000/year-$200,000/year supposed to comfortably afford that?
This is why I'd much rather earn $60,000/year in Pittsburgh than $150,000 in San Jose. In one city I can buy a home on that salary. In the other? I can't.

There’s so many tech jobs and tech companies in SV that it’s literally a blip on the radar honestly.
Basically. We see exponentially more movement within Bay Area counties than movement out of the region, it's that the media has this running narrative that 'everyone is moving' and so they highlight outbound relocations when they occur.
The 2 most important local corporate relocations to me this year are as follows:
1 Visa is moving it's HQ from Foster City to San Francisco's new Mission Rock development.
2. Stripe, the nation's 2nd most valuable start up($35B) is leaving San Francisco for a new office park in South San Francisco.
McKesson leaving was expected as they leased out their trophy tower 3 years ago, Charles Schwab is not a surprise either as theyd been talking about it for a long time.
Trust me folks, there is a lot more happening within the area than whose moving.
This reads like overflow, not net reduction. It's the expense and growth pressures. If those ease, move-outs should reduce.
I watch this closely because Seattle's boom is related to SF's overflow, speaking as a general contractor for buildings and corporate/tech tenant improvements. If SF has a hitch, we might also. Ours are mostly expansions, not moves.
