Why not relocate to another part of NY that doesn't get a lot of snow?

Check out Columbia SC which is one of the remaining bargains for home buying considering location and amenities. Columbia is the state capital and college town (U of South Carolina) so there's much more to it than a typical city of 135K. You can find a considerable number of desirable homes under 100K with fenced yards in quieter/safe suburbs close to everything you'd need. The Columbia area has somewhat mild winters with very little if any snow/ice and very nice Springs/Falls. Summer while hot is pretty much on par with it's normal three month timeframe (June-July-August) and not unlike most of the rest of the country. https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sal...64_rect/11_zm/

-30? Where you live at? The NY/Canadian border?

Given your budget for housing that pretty much prices you completely out of downstate NY where there's less snow.

I'd consider Cincinnati. Lot less snow and you can still get decent deals on housing.

Check out the area around Cookeville, Tennessee.
  • Thriving economy with over 3,000 new jobs in the last couple of years and very low (2.8%) unemployment rate.
  • Generally mild winters with the occasional cold snap and 2-3 light snowfalls per year.
  • Beautiful countryside with over 100 waterfalls within 40 minutes of town.
  • Classic small-town charm with quiet neighborhoods, quaint and thriving downtown, 100+ restaurants, plenty of shopping and entertainment options, and only an hour east of Nashville.
  • The region has other, much smaller towns that offer basic things like Dollar General stores, etc.
Here's a sampling of homes out in the country but near town, less than 1000 square feet that have sold recently for less than $100k:

You sound kind of like me. You are childfree and want a house under $100,000. I wonder if you are my age. I am 20 and I don't plan on having kids and I don't want a large expensive home with a lot of land. I'd prefer a small home with a small lot, but I guess you need a yard. I'd prefer calm and quiet activity too. If you don't mind cold, but you want less snow, I'd say you could try living in the Pacific Northwest (western Oregon or western Washington only) where they have rainy, coldish, drowsy winters with very little to no snow. Deserts in general get less precipitation, so you could try any desert (except Colorado) where snow amounts are less. Parts of Arizona are blazing hot and the temperatures will never get too cold at night. There are parts of Arizona that get some snow though.

Yes Tennessee and Virginia sound like looking into more. I lived in NC for 8 years and didn't like the humidity and bugs.
In fact the old Dupont plants up stream of Wilmington,NC have been polluting the river that supplies drinking water for years.
Not a fan of chemical plants in my backyard.

I know people in TX,NC and FL but have no desire to live in those states.
I'm 56 and retiring soon.
