LeBron James recently opened a public school in his hometown of Akron and in the press surrounding the school, all the articles mention that the school is providing free transportation for all children within 2 miles. Apparently the Akron public schools as a whole do not provide transportation. This came as a complete shock to me. I live in the city that will bus kids to PRIVATE school.

Are there any other urban school districts that do not provide transportation, either through school buses, or passes for public transportation to K-12 students?

In the 3 states i have lived in (FL, NC, SC), bus transportation to public school has been provided as part of the overall cost of doing business for students outside of the "walk zones". I have read on other C-D forums that this is not the case in some districts, i believe specifically Southern California/San Diego and some suburban Chicago areas. Again, only remember that from forum lurking.

Chelsea only has bussing for K-4, and Winthrop K-2, my guess is they probably have busses for their sports teams and use them for small kids but don't have a full fleet.

It sure makes getting around easier without buses.

It is a small city SD(has a little over 50,000 people): Home - Lakewood City School District

It is just such a dense municipality(one of the most dense in between NYC and Chicago at around 9400/square mile) that walking makes more sense.

Isn't this quite common in urban areas? Once students are old enough the schools just give them a free bus pass and send them off.

That counts as providing transportation.
