Louisville looks nice - love those brownstones. I should have specified in my original posting that I want a place with a fair amount of sunshine. We are moving from Pittsburgh and I don't think I can take any more gloomy. What do you think of Louisville weather?
Also, thanks for the Arkansas info. Little Rock would definately be out based on the crime, but Hot Springs may be nice.
If you're looking for plenty of sunshine, stay south of Atlanta, GA.
You might like Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, and Birmingham, Alabama which are all growing but offer different varieties in each city.
As a Dallas native, I can tell you that there are plenty of sunny days there, even in the wintertime.
Savannah, GA is beautiful in parts, with such a spiritual presence. Also, Charleston, SC is fantasic--very southern. Overall, check out Chattanooga, TN though. It's undergoing a huge renaissance right now--lots of construction.
Savannah is one of the most charming places I have ever visited - however, I think the crime would exclude it from my list of potentials. Charleston is too expensive unless you want to go suburbia.
I keep hearing that Mobile, AL is a nice place?? People from all over seem to like it there. Supposedly is fairly safe, clean, and has good schools. Thought I would add that.
I agree with much of what has been said (except for Louisville KY which isn't much different from Pittsburgh).
Since the quality of public schools is important, that will unfortunately eliminate many of the big cities.
Chattanooga is a biggish city but is in a gorgeous setting, surrounded by mountains. It's one of the few big cities where you can go whitewater rafting and hanggliding within minutes of downtown. Chattanooga's central city also has great public transportation, nice in-town neighborhoods, parks, bike trails, etc. But its public schools aren't very swift.
Knoxville is a little sprawly but has good public schools and a booming job market. It's also next to the beautiful Smoky Mountains.
College towns, however, might be something you should check out since they'll generally have excellent schools, more cultural opportunities and a better job scene. And since they tend to be smaller towns, they often offer very family-friendly neighborhoods (away from campus, of course) and activities.
