There are a lot of states I have been to but don't have an opinion or can't decide. Lake View, Iowa get points for being an ancestral home and wouldn't merit a mention otherwise. The other two ancestral homes on the list are Chicago and New Haven which can be on their own merit.
For me, mostly college towns and large cities with colleges.

New York (Where I was raised, Staten Island represent!): NYC (all boroughs), Hamptons, all of Long Island. Least favorites are the upstate cities as they are cold and pretty depressed compared to the southern part of the state.

Montana: Helena ( Cute town, considered moving here at one time)
Idaho: Pocatello ( small town, surrounded by smaller hills/mountains, friendly people)
South Dakota: Custer ( Small town set near a state park, very quaint)
Wyoming: Star Valley (Not a single town, but the entire area that is surrounded by three national Forests and the kindest people I have ever met.)
I've driven through Oregon and Washington state, but never stopped long enough at any town to form an opinion.
