Katrina, as I said above, New York only works in my first category. There is no place that has the formal name of "New York City". We use "city" to differentiate it from "state" and if NYS were called "Empire", than the city that grew on Manhattan would be known today as New York, Empire.....and "city" would never be a part of it.

Of course both "New York City" and NYC are commonly used and totally appropriate. But they are the official name. In the same sense that we often refer to Los Angeles as LA, even though LA is not its official name.

At one time, Columbia University was not looked at in terms of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. But in the last half century or so, Columbia realized that its NY location was a real feeling point and the university today is called "Columbia University in the City of New York". That's an example of what I mean.

Missouri City, Missouri, population 267, a little ways outside of Kansas City.
Then there's the much bigger Missouri City, Texas, a suburb of Houston.
Just for fun, there is a Houston, Missouri, county seat of: Texas County.
