I had a thought that interested me earlier: what US cities would have the most variety of car tags (as in, different states/cities) at any given moment? Curious to see what sort of answers this might have.

I would think that a major tourist city that is located near the junction of two or more states would be your best bet. In the United States, this would surely mean New York. In addition to the cars of the residents with New York license plates, you would also have commuters from nearby New Jersey and Connecticut, and even a few from Pennsylvania. And of course, you'd also have the plates on the cars of visitors.

A runner-up would be Washington, where you'd have the DC plates of the residents plus Maryland, Virginia, and a few West Virginia plates from the commuters, and of course the plates on the cars of the tourists. (I don't have stats on this, but there could be as many or more visitors who come to Washington by car as there are in New York, simply because New York is such a pain to have a car in that many people choose to fly or take a train or a bus to get there.)

Another good candidate would be Orlando, Florida. This is one of the premier family vacation cities in America, and many families will drive on their vacations, in part because of prohibitively expensive airfare for 3, 4, 5, or more people per family. Thus, you are likely to see many out of state plates (in addition to Florida) in Orlando.

Has to be Washington.

Locally alone it’s a mix of MD, DC and VA everywhere. You get some WV and PA commuters. There are loads of NC tags. Delaware and NY are often quite common taking 95 back up North

Not saying it’s the top but Chicago has mostly Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. Chicago literally borders the state of Indiana. Wisconsin border only an hour away. So you sees those a lot here.

I saw more out-of-state plates in Denver than I've seen anywhere else in my life. Probably literally less than half of the plates were Colorado ones - and the others weren't just from states bordering Colorado. I saw Maryland, New York, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Oregon, Virginia... It really must be a huge magnet right now.

Yes, growing States tend to have this variety. In Washington State, we see a lot of Texas, California, South Dakota, Utah, Arizona, and the usual nearby suspects, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska (the latter not exactly nearby!)

In Metro Atlanta, Alabama and Florida is the most common out of state plates I see. North Carolina and Tennessee also very common. New York I see fairly often as well. South Carolina, Mississippi,Texas, Louisiana, and California, I see every now and again.

DC had a variety.
Austin. Believe it or not, I've seen every state's license plates in that city.

Another tourist area: Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. I used to go there a lot - aside from the obvious TN and NC plates, I'd see a bit of AL, GA, VA, KY, FL, and a bunch of others.
