Cities with disproportionately large associated “Hinterlands” (bars, money)

What cities have very large populations that use that city as “the city”.

For example Boston metro is 4.8 million but it’s “the city” for 12.5-13 million. Maine pays money so places as far as Bruinswick have regular access to Boston via the Downeaster.

Denver has a metro of 2.8 million but it is “the city” 7 million or so.

Hartford has a metro of 1.2 million but people will head to NYC or Boston if they want to spend a day in the city, large touring acts tend to stop in NYC or Boston and bypass Hartford for example so Hartford is a city without hinterlands.

So it sounds like this should happen where one city is the largest and most major thing around for a long way, but the overall region isn't too sparsely populated so there are a lot of people to use it as "the city".

I'd think a few examples would be Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Dallas, Denver, and (maybe) Minneapolis.

Dallas is the city for people from as far as the Texas Panhandle, West Texas east of the mountains, Oklahoma, and parts of Louisiana, Kansas, and Arkansas.

Houston is the big city for the Rio Grande Valley, Southeastern Texas, and Southwestern Louisiana.

In Texas, I think Dallas has a bigger hinterland.

So more I'd throw in... Toronto, Detroit, San Francisco, Phoenix and New Orleans.

Its surprisingly how far away the Washington DC area spreads. Some counties in West Virginia are still considered part of Greater Washington for some reason. Some counties in Pennsylvania are technically classified as part of the New York City metro.

New Orleans has a large sphere of influence, even as far as Biloxi, Mississippi. Though true NO city residents don't even consider Hammond and Ponchatoula to be part of the New Orleans area.

Any place that has monopolized an industry as they "pull" from the entire nation. LA, DC, NYC, SF, Houston etc..
