Just curious if there's opinions on places that are similar to Boise. We visited and really like it there, but my wife doesn't like cold weather. The things that we enjoyed were: low crime, low traffic, job opportunities, plenty of recreational things and community events. Any other spots that share those similarities in the US?

Chattanooga, TN, Fayetteville, AR or Asheville, NC might be options.

Reno, Nevada is almost a dead ringer for Boise after you take out the casinos. Somewhat warmer than Boise, but still can get snow.

I'll add Tucson, AZ (not the ideal job market, but low cost, tons of outdoor fun close), Albuquerque, NM, and Flagstaff, AZ into the mix to take a look at.

I agree with this. These 3 are pretty close, but are greener/more lush than Boise. But I do like Boise.

Chattanooga, TN, Fayetteville, AR or Asheville, NC as cities all have violent and property rates way above the national average (50-100 plus % higher) according to data compiled by FBI from local law enforcement.

Reno has a violent crime rate 40% higher than national average and a property crime rate that is 30% higher.

If you want crime rates below the national average that will eliminate most big cities themselves.

Now you could choose a safer suburb (in these 4 metros, though you have to be very picky around Chattanooga) and be careful in the city itself and be alright; but if you insist on low crime rates in the city, you'll have to be very selective and possibly have to give on other criteria.

Tampa is pretty safe in the city according to the data. Mesa AZ by itself. Arlington TX is not too bad. Lexington KY. Parts of Colorado Springs. There are some other places that you'd probably consider too cold or not exciting. Or perhaps too small. How big a city or metro do you want? How small is too small?

If you want to be safe at home, the general advice is live in a suburb of middle or higher income.

Outside Roanoke VA is safe on violent crime and average on property crime. If it is not too cold or too small and is interesting enough.

Not exactly, but yes BSU is famous for the smurf turf. (Division 1)

More color: including Eastern Washington University who has a red field.

You are looking for a small to medium size city in a conservative area. To get warmer weather, you will be looking a lot closer to the southern border.

If the people who live there have any brains at all, they are keeping their mouths shut, so I suggest that you get out a map, look for smaller towns in conservative states closer to the south. Get the names of the towns and start to do your research.

And there lies the problem with crime stats. As someone very familiar with Asheville the notion that it's dangerous is at best ridiculous. It would be a great alternative to someone who finds Boise appealing and wouldn't let some numbers/ratios deter from that. Read through and if necessary post in the Western NC Forum here on City-Data for some further reality checks.
