Definitely Birmingham. Both sit in the Appalachian region and have a history related to the steel industry, and have hills in the city limits.

What is the Salt Lake City of the Mid-West?

SLC is in the Midwest! (Kidding, see other CD post, lol)

Des moines? It's a bigger metro than many assume, and more of a tech hub than many assume.

What's the atlanta of any region except the southeast?

Columbia, MD or Reston, VA (both are planned communities).

Perhaps there are more Irvine counterparts near other big E Coast metros,
but DC/Baltimore is the only E Coast metro I'm familiar with.

Glad that people are having fun with this thread. Remember to rep its creator.

What is the Asheville of the upper Midwest (if there is one)?

Birmingham, AL very industrial for the South and has some of Detroit's troubled history with issues such as crime and race relations. Like Detroit, Birmingham is trying to reinvent itself and if you look at it with an unbiased mind there are some signs of success.

What non-Colorado city in the Mountain West (will define as Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico) is in the best position to be the next Nashville or Austin?
