Which city is considered as the NYC of the South? (universities, live in)

CNN has definitely brought a new idea to the south, basically because of Ted Turner. They, along with a huge hub airport at Hartsfield-Jackson has made Atlanta the most important city south of NYC and DC. This is a no-brainer.

Atlanta at times tries to be the NYC of the South (sometimes Georgia is called the Empire State of the South), but Atlanta (and all of the other listed cities) are very different from NYC. None of them have anywhere close to the density and vibrancy of New York.
Seriously none of the cities in the south are like NYC. Very few cities in this country alone have comparable attributes like NYC. The only cities that have comparable attributes to NYC are Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and Philly. Those cities aren't even that close to being like NYC either, but they come the closesest.
The cities in the south are more comparable to LA, but in no way shape or form is any city in that region like NYC. Way off.
None of them, the south doesn't have a city that matches it aesthetically (Like a Chicago almost does in parts) or influentially/population/entertainment industry wise, ( like an LA almost does).
The south has many cool cities, but it doesn't have any monsterish size cities.
Saying any southern city is the NYC of the south is just setting it up to get bashed.
And before anybody goes crazy...
Personally I'd rather live in Atlanta over NYC, more space, more green, warmer weather... but it isn't like NYC at ALLLLL.
I think what you might be going for (I hope) is which city in the south is the most influential...that is another topic altogether.
But even still, the south is more evenly balanced than other regions having the 4 you mentioned all similar populations and gdp.
