I grew up in Massachusetts and we would regularly cross the New Hampshire border to get tax free hard items, fireworks, cheaper gas and cheaper alcohol.

Someone in New Hampshire might cross the border to come to Mass to buy legal marijuana, go to better hospitals or see a big name sporting event.

Do you go out of your way to cross state lines to get something you can't get in your home state or something that is more readily available/cheaper in the next state?

I go to Idaho to swim in the summer. Puget Sound is too cold, Lake Washington is always too crowded, Lake Sammamish has really short opening hours and never has any parking, and most of the WA lakes east of the Cascades like Moses Lake are just bland and small. Lake Coeur d'Alene is the bee's knees and worth the 4.5-hour trip

(Plus... it must be something about the culture out there, it's nice to see guys in sopping swim trunks who actually work out)

Same applies for Chicago residents into Indiana. Gas was always cheaper in the Indiana burbs.

Florida has no sales tax on food.

Lots of people also go to Florida to buy scratch offs and lottery tickets.

I'm pretty sure it's very common for Vancouver, WA residents to cross the border to purchase items in OR

i live in the middle of Alabama, so this doesn't apply to me as much, but for those on or near the borders of Tennessee, Georgia, Florida or Mississippi: GAMBLING (specifically the lottery in the first three and casinos in the last).

NJ has no sales tax on clothing - lots of folks come from NY/NYC to the NJ malls.

SC was where you went for fireworks and cheap gas. They even built a mini-tourist trap out of it, South of the Border.
