Single income FedEx driver family of three. As immigrant I did not realize that my voter card determines my place of residence.

OP, Look into Pendleton, OR. It's at the base of the Blue Mountains on a grassy plain SE of the Columbia River. There is a large FedEx distribution center just to the west of town. Not many trees that people didn't plant, but about 15 miles SE of town the forest begins.

Duluth, Minnesota, just for a little contrast.

Duluth is a lovely, quiet, inconspicuous old city of uniformly pleasant neighborhoods, and very friendly and open people. Nature wanders right into your own backyard.

The highlight is winter birding. Your feeder will be visited by a dozen wintering species, who spend the rest of the year a thousand miles from human eyes. Every serious birder takes at least one winter trip to Duluth, and it's fun to hang around the hot spots and chat with them.

Superior, Wisconsin, is sorta like the alley behind Duluth, but offers a different look that may appeal as an alternative.

Good mention, disappointed I didn't think of this being from MN. Certainly checks off the liberal vibe despite being a city.

Rust belt, eclectic, inexpensive, hilly, gorgeous natural beauty with Lake Superior views. Tons of snow. Totally wrong for the wrong person, but totally a gem for the right one!
