It's not quite a town, but the top of Pikes Peak might be the best place in the world to eat a doughnut.

There’s a great documentary called “The Donut King” on this subject.

When I worked in LA in the 80s one of the things that visitors to our office would do is always bring us donuts to start our morning meetings. We did the same whenever we visited other offices around the country. But most offices told us this was not customary. I remember visiting our Walnut Creek, CA (Bay Area) office and wanting to bring donuts but we had the hardest time finding a donut shop. We eventually settled on a small bakery that also had some donuts.

Winchells was king in LA then, so much so that now whenever I visit LA, I make sure to buy some donuts (Raspberry filled Glaze) from the Winchells location on Melrose just west of La Brea Ave. I do that and load up on TX BBQ from Bludso's around the corner on La Brea Ave...the best TX BBQ west of TX.

I thought this post was going to be about donut metros in the sense of having a hollowed-out core surrounded by a ring of populated suburbia, heh

LA has the whole spectrum of donuts, from national chains to mom-n-pop to immigrant businesss and artisanal donuts. The best donut I’ve had was Sidecar donuts.

Those look like some of the best selections of doughnuts you could ever find.
I've never been there before, but it will be a must the next time I'm in LA.
