Hi, I'm trying to narrow down my search for cities to move to. I currently live in New York state (not NYC). I think some outside opinions would be of great value and so appreciated. I work remotely so jobs sectors aren't too much of an issue for me.
I'm a black female, early 30s, school aged child. I'm looking for a city with a decent black population (about 15% or more), good public school options, urban or mostly urban (nothing too rural) and a good economic outlook. I also prefer a population of 100k or more, but I am open minded. I've considered Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago (maybe too pricey for me), Las Vegas etc. I've also considered Baltimore and Detroit but I'm not sure of the public school options and economic future.
What do you think I should consider? Hopefully I provided enough information . Private messages are welcome as well. Thank you
If a place is paying people to move there then you'll have to ask what's wrong with it. In Tulsa's case you should be able to see in one afternoon. A trip to the downtown area should be enough to show how boring and dangerous the place is.
Where in NYS are you moving from? I ask, because it can give some idea of places to look. If you are from Upstate, a city/area like Lansing MI would be similar in some ways and East Lansing would be a good option in terms of good schools, having walkability in much of the city and relatively good public transportation. The Waverly/West Lansing area is a suburban area there that also comes to mind.
Ann Arbor MI also comes to mind and it has over 100k people within the city, with generally good schools. Cost of living is a little bit higher, but not by much. The only thing is that while it’s schools are diverse, the city is under 15%. Same for East Lansing, but Lansing is about 24%.
If you want the Detroit area, I’d consider Farmington/Farmington Hills or the portions of the Grosse Pointe SD in Harper Woods. Both situations would fit your criteria. They are suburbs. So, i don't know if that would be an issue for you.
There are other places that come to mind as well.

I'm from Upstate NY. Thanks so much for your detailed response. I'll be looking into those places
No problem...I will say if you stay and given your concerns, consider adjacent suburbs/select parts of cities, as they may have what you are looking for.

Downtown Tulsa is dangerous? Since when? Why?
