The Gathering of Nations powwow will be making its triumphant return to Albuquerque at the end of this month. It had been on hiatus because of the pandemic for the last two years. It's the largest gathering of Native Americans in North America and the world. This will be its 39th gathering. Like always, Miss Indian World will be crowned at the event as well.
Albuquerque has so much Native history and culture in the city and across our metro area. From ancient ruins to today's lavish Indian casinos and resorts, it's visible and felt everywhere you go here.
Isleta Pueblo and Sandia Pueblo are directly adjacent to the city while several others surround the urban heart of the metro area.
Albuquerque is home to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center that is run by and showcases the culture of the 19 Indian Pueblos of modern-day New Mexico. Being near the Navajo Reservation there are also lots of Navajos in the city. UNM and the Navajo Nation collaborated to make the Lobo Rainforest building an off-campus residential building for Navajo students attending UNM. It's located in Downtown Albuquerque. Albuquerque is also home to the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute on the Westside. SIPI draws Native students from across the country.
The old Albuquerque Indian School site is owned collectively by the 19 Indian pueblos and is being redeveloped into a mixed-use project with commercial space, office buildings and hotels. It's called Avanyu Plaza. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has its Southwestern regional offices at the site. Laguna Burger also has a restaurant there serving its famous and award-winning green chile cheeseburger. Laguna Burger is operated by Laguna Pueblo and its original location is just west of the city on the reservation. The Starbucks location at Avanyu Plaza is the only freestanding one licensed to a Native American corporation in the country.
The first Native American Cabinet Secretary and current Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland, is from Albuquerque. Before being appointed to her position by President Biden she was one of the first two Native American women members of Congress, both elected in 2018. She represented most of metro Albuquerque in Congress before being appointed to head Interior. She is originally from Laguna Pueblo but grew up in Albuquerque.
Does it count if Native Americans migrate from Latin America?
Some corners of the U.S. have pretty large communities of straight-up indigenous Latin Americans now who don't even speak Spanish as a first language. Like New Bedford, MA has a pretty large Guatemalan Mayan community.

Sure that definitely fits the purpose of the thread IMHO .
That's very interesting to read about New Bedford , one would think that indigenous people from Brazil would have a significant presence , but life is full of surprises as they say .

Likewise Shelton, WA. Not a big town (11k) but it's not a reservation town. Apparently nearby Bremerton, WA also has a sizable Mayan community, and it's more of a decent-sized city (41k).
Syracuse has urban/city Native American residents with usually Akwesasne aka Mohawk living on the city’s West Side and some others(mainly Onondaga) living in the Valley section in the far southern end of the city. Onondaga Nation land is south of the city, with some in the working/middle class suburb of Nedrow in between the Valley and Nation. About 12% of that community’s residents are Native American(alone/in combo). Lafayette, the school district kids from the Onondaga Nation attend is 38% Native American and is known for its Lacrosse program, as it is a sport that the Onondagas created and is the fastest growing sport in the country. Here is a documentary about these brothers currently playing pro lacrosse that are from the Onondaga Nation and attended that school: https://youtube.com/watch?v=hjQGcDTcF2g&feature=share
Buffalo/the Western NY region is another part of the state with a pretty strong presence, mainly Seneca and some Tuscarora. Some live in the city’s West Side, in/around Niagara Falls and some other places in that area(school districts such as Niagara-Wheatfield, Silver Creek, Gowanda, Salamanca and Akron).
Also, some of the nations own casinos and contribute to the local economies with jobs for the areas they are in at large.
Some of the other nations have their enterprises or businesses as well, but many of them are in more rural environments. There is this arena on Onondaga Nation land that is just south of Syracuse that has events and ice skating, etc open to the public: https://onondagaarena.com/ https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9654...7i16384!8i8192 (if you go up a bit, you can see the Syracuse skyline in the distance)
So, you can find some Native American owned business venues in urban/metro areas in multiple parts of NY State.
But for some reason I think there is also an actual reservation somewhere in the city limits.
There's no reservation in the city limits of either Minneapolis or St. Paul.
However, there are sovereign tribal lands in Shakopee and Prior Lake (the southwestern suburbs), known as the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC). Members of the community run a very popular resort casino there.
Yes I just remembered reading something about there being a Native reservation or two on Long Island , but it completely slipped my mind till now .
Anyways thanks for the info !
