I'll second the comment about El Paso. Absolutely beautiful. I was enamored by the views of hills and mountains right across the border in Mexico. You can see their neighborhoods and miles of homes streets and buildings during the day and lighted up at night. The desert-like scenery adds to the mystique.

And the U.S. side is built around a string of mountains that divide the city in half, so that you see the mountains from anywhere in the city. Nicely-designed interstates run parallel to the mountains throughout the city so that you don't feel trapped by traffic lights and traffic.

El Paso is a wildly underrated city. They have plenty of money which is evident by the big homes high on the mountain side as well as in the valley near the river. On the whole the city is definitely not wealthy yet in comparison to a Dallas or Austin and certainly not in comparison to a Seattle or Boston type city in any way.

However, with El Paso's gorgeous climate and terrain and enchanting border location, when the wealth comes over the next 50 years or so, I think El Paso will end up as one of those cities that people flock to the way they do now to Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and and other western cities.

Start at Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, coming through West Hollywood, then Beverly Hills, then connecting to Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades. Turn right on PCH and head to Malibu. The scent of the ocean breeze and wind is invigorating.

Any Interstate. Just give me the highway and some music I like, and I'm in a tranquil state of mind.

I agree with those that say LA is great, but I’m surprised no one has mentioned it’s home to the most random late night traffic jams? And they’re not just from construction (very common) or accidents?

To jiggle the challenge a little bit, I'd say late night drives are great in trafficky cities like New York and Boston. Are they the best cities for late-night drives? No, but driving late at night can be enjoyable compared to the rest of the time. Going over Manhattan Bridge at night, returning on Brooklyn Bridge is cool. Bumpy and slow even at night but so cool. Boston too-- coming up out of the tunnel onto the Zakim, swooping ramps, Mystic River bridge-- quick glimpses at many different angles.
