It won't happen while most of us are alive, but I can definitely see a time when the corridor from Fayetteville to Raleigh to Greensboro to Charlotte to Atlanta fills into one big urban drive. It certainly would fall into a hectic one with a lot of trucks.

It totally is, but the rule was "not going backwards". What's interesting is how highly urbanized the shoreline of the actual SF Bay is versus how rural/less developed the Pacific coastline is once you're past Daly City and Pacifica. 280 between SF and San Jose is quite beautiful and scenic since it's mostly rolling hills and forests with smallish towns dotted in between.

Going by the letter of the question, you could drive 6,074 miles and never leave NYC let alone the suburbs. Although you couldn't get them all, there are more than a couple miles of dead ends.

Colfax Ave. In Denver is widely considered to be the longest commercial stretch in America at 26.5 miles of continuous urbanity, with no breaks in development. Look it up.

I've driven NS through Somerset Kentucky and Durango Colorado. Those seem like contenders.

I don't think 26miles would crack the top 10 longest continuous stretch in America.
