Some observation:
1. DC and SF already had high income back then, and that haven't changed even now
2. Midwest, as expect, ranks much higher. There are also a bunch of smaller Midwest metros (Rockford is #31, South Bend #38, Gary #42 and higher than NYC, Toledo $45, Kalamazoo #46) that makes the list and are now quite economically depressed.
3. NV is insane...back then they basically only have casinos, and their incomes are still insanely high.
4. CT was rich, VERY rich...

P.S. 18Montclair how can you left out DC of all place .

Some comment:
1. Keep in mind Alaska and Hawaii just became a state in this census. Both states fare pretty well on this list
2. Conn. was wealthy...VERY wealthy...I'll have to repeat this again
3. Cal also had high income even back then
4. The Midwest are kind of in the middle, but mostly fare better than the national number
5. Mississippi (and Arkansas) were poor...VERY poor, and are still the two poorest states arguably in the whole country.
6. The south overall was awful. States like NC or GA and especially VA (Thanks mainly to NoVA) are faring much better nowaday.

First anomaly that jumped out at me -- Georgia is higher than Illinois, but Chicago is a bit above Atlanta. Which would imply tha rural Georgia is above rural Illinois.

Virginia isn’t fairing better these days “mainly due to NoVa”. The Richmond MSA keeps appearing pretty high on all of these lists. The Charlottesville area (Albemarle) does too. York Co (Hampton Roads) and Goochland Co (Richmond) both appear near the top of some of these wealthy county lists too.

Northern Virginia is a powerhouse but the rest of the commonwealth fares very well too (SWVA and South side notwithstanding).

Fairfax County only gets 23 cents for each dollar it pays in state taxes…

For Goochland Co isn't most of that "wealth" basically in those exurban-like development just west of Short Pump? And population is like 25k...

York County VA reminds me somewhat of the areas of Anne Arundel County or even Calvert County next to the bay with those property with water access. Definitely wealthy enclaves...

That being said NoVA is still like 45% of the state's GDP. RVA is definitely doing good, but NoVA is definitely what push Virginia's median/average income way up.

Sure. But if you look at an income distribution map, the commonwealth still outperforms states to the south and Midwest.

Some people act like Northern Virginia is an anomaly (like it’s rare that one area of a state outperforms the others). This is true of every state. NoVa is no different than Atlanta, New York, Chicago or Seattle. Unlike a lot of other states though, Virginia still does very well outside of our chief metro.

Complicating things further. My higher taxes mean there are things that are free or cost less to me than to my brother. Who is wealthier now?

I make more than him, but he takes home more, but he pays more for non-equity expenses...let's say public transit.

The census should know better than publishing data in an oversimplified manner. I don't think it's accurate that Loudoun County is the wealthiest in the country.
Obviously, what and how you measure affects the outcome. One advantage Loudon has over others is that an estimated 70% of global internet traffic passes through NoVa Data centers. The big cloud players have been paying in excess of $2M an acre for suitable land. Currently, Loudon has 100+ data centers on 30M sq ft, that generate $500M in taxes or about $1,200 per capita. Hard to beat that. The data center rush has now spread to other NoVa counties, and into Frederick Co Md.

Colorado 1

Surprises:
*Connecticut, Washington, Massachusetts not in the top 20
*Virginia is a deeply wealthy area in the DC suburbs--as-is Maryland
*California, I would've thought, should have more representation in the top 20, but wealth is being more distributed
*The west and the south showing up well with Colorado (Denver metro), Texas (Dallas metro), Georgia (Atlanta metro) and Tennessee (Nashville metro)
*Despite the perception of some about New Jersey nationally, it is a wealthy state in many Jersey suburbs of NYC
CT and MA are not surprising- they're never on any county-type lists.

The counties there are huge in comparison to the total land area of the state. MA has like 12 (mainland) counties whereas Maryland has 23. CT has 8. So MD counties contain on average less than half as many people as a CT or MA county. Even NJ has more counties than MA and CT combined. The two no mainland counties in MA im not counting are Marthas Vineyard which isnt that wealthy, that's really just the people who visit/summer. And Nantucket which might be too small to qualify here. It has like 10,000 residents.

Much of those counties that are in the "Boston Area" or "Tri-State" is- in reality- far removed from Boston or Stamford or NYC and rural and moderate-income. And almost all the counties have poor cities in them. Especially in MA.

Yeah. Counties in those areas are just different beats.

I mean, Middlesex County in MA spans from Everett, to Natick, to Westford, and includes areas like Cambridge and Somerville. It's an accumulation of many different towns/cities/areas that have zero relevance to one another. The average Middlesex county native hasn't even heard of all of the towns in the county.

But, no harm in comparing counties in general if it's your thing.

The bolded county is very interesting given that it is a more small town/rural county east of Syracuse. It does have some old affluence in the Cazenovia area though.
