I remember seeing a sign on the Indiana-Illinois border that said, "Illinoyed by high taxes, come to Indiana." I was curious after seeing this about the economic rivalries between states. I know in recent years California and Texas have had a pretty intense economic rivalry. I was curious what other states have a strong rivalry and if anyone had any good stories about how states have tried to draw business away from one state to their own?
I think Virginia vs Maryland (D.C. Area). VA has some advantages such as Dulles Airport and being the more business friendly state. Virginia is the economic engine of the D.C. area. It seems that MD is sorely lagging in job production vs D.C. and VA.
When I was a kid, I remember New Jersey was taking businesses and residents from New York. Probably taking from Pennsylvania as well. I do not hear about these states competing anymore though.
I think for it to be a rivalry there has to be contention from both sides. I don't see it being a rivalry between Texas and California. I see it as just a few Texas governors actively trying to poach companies from California the last few years. I really don't see California doing or saying anything to win Texas companies so I can't really call that one a rivalry. California is comfortably in the lead and if they are upset with Texas they certainly haven't been making a big stink about it.

It is not a rivalry if it is only one of the states trying to convince people to move.

This...and on a more micro level it was FFX VA vs. MoCo MD. MoCo MD is definitely falling behind in terms of job production.
The latest VA vs. MD battle is the FBI Headquarter relocation. Maryland politicians right now are certainly not happy that GSA changed the criteria of the new HQ being closer to the FBI training ground at Quantico which favors VA over the long rumored Greenbelt MD site.
P.S. For CA vs. TX - TBH Texas has been trying to poach not just from CA but also IL (Chicago) and to lesser extent, NYC.
Seems like companies and people voluntarily leave places like California and Illinois in favor of places like Texas. Not sure any poaching, convincing, or arm twisting is needed all that much when it comes to certain types of states.
