Thank you all for your responses! There is such great insight in this thread and I've learned a lot. Seems like PNW and Northern Midwest/Great Lakes Area has the strongest ties, which checks out with my impressions. Interestingly, when I visited Seattle a few years ago, I thought that the feel of the city seemed similar to my impression of Oslo (though I haven't yet been, so not sure that means much).
I had an interesting discussion with a colleague a few years back who had been to Norway, I asked him how it was. He shrugged and said it reminded him of Maine (we're in New England). I can perhaps see that, there are some similarities in natural features (rocky shores & fir trees) & building stock; I see similar wooden buildings in other North American Northern Atlantic areas like Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
