What about Auburn, Alabama, home of Auburn University? It was named after the "Sweet Auburn" in a poem by Oliver Goldsmith. Some cities sound like they were named after another city, but were not.

Cities in the US named after a foreign city, and the US version is larger/more well known.

Boston MA > Boston, England
New York City > York, England
Worcester MA > Worcester, England?

Two Seattle suburbs: Des Moines, named for the Iowa capital and Kenmore, named for the Ontario city, which had been named for the Scottish village. Old-time residents pronounce the 's' in Moines, as in De Moinz.
