In Oklahoma there are a couple of tiny places that have interesting histories regarding their names...
For a while there were two "Porters" in Oklahoma. Due to the confusion the post office said that one of them had to change their name and it was determined that the older Porter in eastern Oklahoma could keep it's name. And the younger Porter would need to change theirs. So they changed their name to Retrop (Porter spelled backwards).
Another one is a place at the entry of the Oklahoma Panhandle. Back at about the time of statehood a fellow had a trading post there in the middle of nowhere. Customers would come in and the owner would tell them that he was "slapout" of whatever item they were looking for. As a few more people moved to the area and they decided to pick a name for the tiny community...they picked "Slapout" due to the trading post's owner's notorious empty shelves.

That is a good one. Otherwise, you would think Galt is named after a person like many other towns and counties.
There is something similar in Queens, a neighborhood called Rego Park, NY. REGO is short for Really Good.
Of all the US towns named Jackson, they are all named after Andrew, none after Stonrwall. But eight states have towns named Stonewall, commemorating that Mr. Jackson. But Jackson County Oklahoma was named for Stonewall.

Cabool, Missouri, reminded a railroad engineer of the countryside where he also built a railroad in Afghanistan. Cabool is the old spelling of Kabul. It's a nice compliment to both places.

Lincoln Maine was named after Enoch Lincoln, the 6th governor of Maine who died in 1829 - he was governor for 3 years from Jan 1827 to October 1829 when he died in office.
Lincoln, Mass sells itself as the only US town named after Lincoln, UK. It was incorporated 50 years before Abe was born.
Lincoln, NH was named after the 9th Earl of Lincoln, Henry Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle. He was the current Earl of Lincoln when the town was founded, but the Earl lived in London and really had nothing to do with the English town of Lincoln.
