Hi All. I could really use some input. I am looking for a good fit for myself and my family. The must have's:
1. SUNNY - Absolute must have. Can be cold, but MUST have lots of sun and daylight
2. DIVERSE - Everyone living amongst each other--not highly segregated, but diverse on paper
3. PROGRESSIVE - Open minded, tolerant
4. KIND - Sincere friendliness. Community. I spook easily (I wet myself in Boston)
5. FOLIAGE - It can even be cactus (just can't do prairie with only grass as far as the eye can see)
Cannot be in California. I live in Bay Area and love love love it with all of my heart. Having to leave is ripping my heart out. However, we an issue that makes staying in the state a complete impossibility.
Secondary pick: the Denver area. It's probably more segregated than ABQ, just because it's a bigger metro area with more wealth, but Aurora (large working-class eastern suburb) seems pretty integrated.
Third pick: Reno, NV. IMO, Las Vegas is too impersonal, and the whole city just exudes this amoral, uncaring energy. But Reno feels more normal, like more of a community --- the casinos and tourism in general are more of an afterthought. The weather can get surprisingly cold (nights in the teens, with snow, aren't uncommon in winter), but it is still a sunny place.

Good suggestions. I lived in Albuquerque for several years and it is a very sunny city (the "International Sunport" is the airport in town). Mostly Hispanic diversity, but all races are present in the city. Nice mountain views to the East especially, but further out to the West and North. You can live up HW 14 and live in the trees and mountains, but still be only 30 minutes or so from Albuquerque proper.
Our son lives in Westminster, CO and my brother in Littleton, CO. Both are western suburbs of Denver. My wife years ago went to Gateway High School in Aurora. If you want a big metro to live in, then Denver could be a very good location.
I did a couple months of work in Carson City, NV recently. Another nice smaller area in the greater Reno/Carson City metro. It would also keep you fairly close to S.F. if you needed to go back from time to time. You could easily drive up there on a long weekend to check the area out. This is Juneteenth weekend, so why not?

Very grateful for any thoughts and suggestions!
What could possibly make staying in the state a “complete impossibility Arrest warrants?
Have to disagree. It's not very open-minded, beyond what the natives like and prefer, and not generally diverse.
Most of Colorado aren't "natives" anymore, I'm sure the same is true for metro Denver. What makes you say it isn't open minded?
Is there a more diverse region that's progressive and sunny?
Diverse/diversity means different things to different people. To me it says the racial mix is not extremely white with only very small percentages of other races. Most of the Northwest cities, and especially small towns, are predominantly Caucasian white, with varying percentages of Hispanic groups, and pretty small percentages of Black and Asian/Pacific races. In most cities those smaller groups do live diversely.
Ashland and the Bend area in Oregon, Walla Walla, WA, and the Boise, ID metro would be good fits, except for diversity. All races are present in these towns/cities, but the percentages beyond white are very small. Though I don't think anyone is aggressively harassed or discriminated against.
Being a military retiree I have lived in quite a few areas of the country. Many of them very sunny (Fairbanks, AK is very sunny at times during the year), and some very diverse by my definition. Would you desire the high humidity of Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia or elsewhere in the SE? The Midwest states have a reputation for being very friendly. Oklahoma City is diverse, friendly, has a lot of trees in the city, but is oppressively hot and humid by my standards from May through September, so I was happy to leave.
Anyway, I've rattled on a bit here and not really said much useful I guess. What I'm saying is can you give us more detail on what your dream city would be?
