Lived in Memphis for over twenty years, fall color was always a watered down version of what fall is like further north. Lots of yellows and gold, some purplish reds, but no fire truck red, no flaming orange, no truly 'vibrant' color IMO. I found that to be true of other southern cities I've lived in that people claim have a 'true Autumn' too.
I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I just don't think that other than up in the mountains that there are a lot of areas in the South that can hold a candle to the spectacular fall color in the North and the Midwest. As a born and bred midwestern gal I was happy to finally 'halfback' to the Appalachian foothills and regain some of those bright colors I was pining for.
