The Bay Area's Black population can't be explained by looking at just the numbers for SF proper-there is a real diaspora going on in NorCal.

B02009 BLACK OR AFRICAN AMERICAN ALONE OR IN COMBINATION WITH ONE OR MORE OTHER RACES
CSA------------2022----2018
Sac CSA----242,026--225,706
Bay CSA----691,099--647,273

Because the city has 9 million people.

Manhattan’s medium income is ~$151k but that alone is not enough to offset the 7.5 million people living in the other 4 boroughs that aren’t swimming in tech, banking/investment money.

Exactly. Perceptions about wealth in the NYC are easily the most skewed of any city in the US. Miami and Los Angeles would round out the Top 3.

Despite the images they portray, these are all generally pretty working-class cities.

1. Connecticut has formally requested that they stop measuring data by counties, but instead by 'planning regions'--so you will see Western CT, CT in this list, that's basically the southern most part of Fairfield, CT and a small area of Litchfield, CT.

2. I bolded any county with a value of $200,000+

3. I included NY, NY because someone always asks.

New Yorkers generally live below their means. Also it’s a massive place. The Bronx, significant part of Queens and a substantial part of Brooklyn/Staten Island isn’t that crazy expensive. Also rent-control + no car helps alleviate a significant amount of the costs. Unlike some other metros the immigrant population of New York still has a strong city tilt to it. Also a city of renters will generally be able to afford more or be more flexible than a city of homeowners. Which allows people to thrive in much wealthier areas.

Very much so. But also take in mind some trends are delayed. LA is so expensive for homes that there’s a strong possibility that given 20 years the working class Latino and Black population will be replaced by Asians and generally more upwardly mobile Hispanics and Black folks in a significant portion of the city.
